Boat crossing to Ilha Grande (Vila do Abraão)

There is no road link to Ilha Grande, so the only way to get there is by sea. The crossings are made by Flexboat, a fast, safe and comfortable boat, with an experienced crew and certified equipment.

Before you book, three details help you choose the crossing:

Where are you coming from? From Rio de Janeiro, Mangaratiba is the closest point. From Paraty or São Paulo, Angra dos Reis is nearer. In Conceição de Jacareí, Marina Porto Real offers the fastest crossing, with the best facilities and comfort.

Where are you heading on the island? If you are going to Vila do Abraão, you can choose between Porto Real, Angra dos Reis, and Mangaratiba. Staying in Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha? A direct crossing to these locations avoids extra travel on the island, so choose Angra dos Reis.

What time do you arrive? Angra dos Reis offers the highest frequency of departures, with 8 daily trips to the island, and the last boat leaves at 6:30 PM. It is a great option for those arriving later in the day.

Santa Luzia station in Angra dos Reis

The Flexboat departs from Estação Santa Luzia, the main tourist pier in downtown Angra dos Reis. Upon arrival, look for the crossing team, present your voucher along with a valid photo ID, and ask about the correct line. At departure time, staff will escort you to the boat. Please note: The public ferry departs from Cais da Lapa, which is a different pier.

Address: Estação Santa Luzia – Av. Júlio Maria, 435, Centro

Arrive 20 minutes before the departure time.

On board the Flexboat

The boats used for the crossings to Ilha Grande are called Flexboats or fast speedboats and carry 30 to 50 passengers. The fiberglass hull and inflatable sides ensure stability and safety throughout the entire journey. All vessels are regularly inspected by the Brazilian Navy and are equipped with a life jacket for every passenger as well as communication devices. A light rain jacket is helpful on windy days. The crew helps load your luggage, and in case of rain, bags are covered with a protective tarp.

Avoid large, heavy suitcases. See the luggage policy.

Parking

There are a few private car parks near Santa Luzia station.

Payment is per day.

Arrival in Vila do Abraão

The boat docks at the main pier in Vila do Abraão, in the center of the beach. The crew delivers the luggage after all passengers have disembarked. There are no cars on Ilha Grande: the streets are made of sand and dirt.

  • On foot: Most guesthouses (pousadas) are just a few minutes’ walk from the pier.

  • With a porter: Licensed porters (carreteiros) wearing yellow T-shirts labeled “Carreteiro Legal” can transport your luggage and help you find your guesthouse.

Questions about this crossing

Tips for your trip to Ilha Grande
  • Bring cash: Many places accept credit cards and Pix, but there are no ATMs on the island.

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: The sun’s reflection on the water is strong, even with a covered boat.

  • Light rain jacket or poncho: Very useful on windy or rainy days, and especially handy on the return trip from speedboat tours.

  • Small suitcase or backpack: Makes it much easier to navigate on the boat and along the island’s sandy streets.

What is the difference between the ferry and the Flexboat?

The public ferry also departs from Angra dos Reis, but from Cais da Lapa instead of Estação Santa Luzia. It is cheaper, but takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, with only 1 departure per day. The Flexboat completes the route in approximately 35 minutes, offers 8 daily departures, and allows online booking with guaranteed seating.

They are also extremely safe, with a fibreglass hull and inflatable sides.

Is it better to cross to Vila do Abraão from Angra dos Reis or from Conceição de Jacareí?

It depends on where you are coming from and where you are going on Ilha Grande. Conceição de Jacareí (Porto Real) has the shortest and most comfortable crossing (20 minutes to Vila do Abraão) and is closer to Rio. Angra dos Reis is more convenient if you are coming from Paraty or São Paulo, or are already in Angra dos Reis, but the crossing to Abraão is longer (35 minutes)

If you are going to Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha, Angra dos Reis is the only place to make the crossing.

Boarding Information
  • After purchase: You will immediately receive a confirmation email with your voucher.

  • Arrival: Arrive at the Estação Santa Luzia pier at least 20 minutes before departure.

  • Check-in: Look for our crossing team and check in by showing your voucher on your phone (or printed) along with a valid photo ID.

  • Boarding line: Ask our staff about the correct line for your departure.

What is the boarding address for the crossing in Angra dos Reis?

Estação Santa Luzia, Av. Júlio Maria, 435 – Centro.

Where can I leave my car in Angra dos Reis?

There are private car parks near the pier, charged per day. In high season they fill up, so try to book in advance. Another option is to take our transfer and leave the car at home.

Does the boat run in rain or strong wind?

Yes, the Flexboat runs normally in the rain: the boats are stable and a cover can be fitted to keep most of the rain out. They are certified by the Brazilian Navy, carry life jackets for every passenger and are operated by experienced sailors. They have a fibreglass hull and inflatable sides, which give stability and safety. In extreme sea conditions that compromise safety, the departure is cancelled by the Port Authority and you will be notified immediately.

Do I need to book the crossing in advance?

Yes, always. On public holidays, weekends and in high season, we recommend booking even further ahead. Each boat has a limited number of seats per departure, and they do sell out. When you book online, you get your confirmation right away, then the voucher by e-mail, and you just show it at the pier.
